How to Spend Christmas in Cape May

1. West Cape May Parade

The annual West Cape May Parade is held on the first Saturday of December and sets the stage for the holiday season. It starts at 5 p.m. sharp from the West Cape May Volunteer Firehouse and marches down Broadway, Perry Street, and Carpenter Lane in the City of Cape May. Spectators of all ages line the streets to enjoy the festive music and floats.

2. Crafts at Christmas

Need to do some last-minute Christmas shopping? Check out Crafts at Christmas at the Cape May Convention Hall. Dozens of crafters offer everything from jewelry and clothing to original artwork. You can browse the vendor booths to find the perfect outfit, gift, or souvenir. As an added bonus, most of the stores in Cape May are open through the holiday season and have extended shopping hours closer to Christmas.

3. Holiday Lights Trolley Ride

The Cape May MAC offers day and nighttime trolley tours through the streets of Cape May. Visitors can admire festively decorated inns and homes from the comfort of a heated trolley. An experienced guide will talk about Victorian Christmas traditions, lead sing-alongs, and play Christmas music. Rides last about 30 minutes and are $12 for adults and $10 for children. Purchase tickets for the Holiday Lights Trolley Ride at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth on Ocean Street.

4. Christmas Candlelight House Tours

Christmas Candlelight House Tours are a highlight of the holiday season. These self-guided walking tours take guests through homes, inns, hotels, and churches that are specially decorated for the holidays. Shop Locally – Save the Economy

At a recent Cape May County Chamber of Commerce Meeting, the statistics below were printed on a flyer to encourage us all to shop locally.  While the obvious is that by shopping locally, we help the local store owners, but reading the facts and figures really puts a new perspective on just how much of a boost we can each give the local economy.  Individually, we can make a difference, but collectively, the impact can be huge.  Consider this:

THREE  (3)

Think about which three independently owned businesses you’d miss most if they were gone.  Stop in and say hello.  Pick up a little something that will make someone smile.  Your contribution is what keeps those businesses around.

FIFTY ($50)

If just half the employed US population spent $50 each month in independently owned businesses, their purchases would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue.  Imagine the positive impact if 3/4 of the employed population did that.

SIXTY EIGHT ($68)

For every $100 spent in independently owned stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures.  If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays here.

ONE (1)

The number of people it takes to start the trend…you.

PICK 3.    SPEND 50.    SHOP LOCAL.

Christmas 2011 – A New Tradition

Keeping the American Dream Alive.

This Christmas, let’s give gifts that show our genuine concern for other Americans.  Rather than purchasing gifts that are produced overseas, let’s support our own economy here at home.

It’s easy.  Just think of the things you need and use every day, or that you might like….

Hmmm….we all need a haircut from time to time, so how about a gift certificate for Aunt Suzie for the local salon?  Maybe she’d like to get her nails done, too!

Most of us drive cars.  Gift certificates for detailing, the car wash, or even an oil change are really useful.  Or, how about a gas card to fill up the tank?

Perhaps a friend is trying to lose weight.  Maybe they would really appreciate a membership to the gym down the street or some classes with a personal trainer to get them on track.  What about some yoga sessions?

Does someone on your list have a pet?  Your local pet store would be happy to help you find the right something for “Fido”.

What about some help around the house?  Who wouldn’t just love to have someone professionally clean the house? or do the windows?  maybe even the carpets?  Don’t forget about outside.  There are plenty of local workmen looking to do things like power washing, gutter cleaning, or yard cleanup.  You could even pre-pay for some lawn mowing.

Does Uncle Joe love a good “cuppa Joe” in the morning?  A gift card from his favorite coffee shop would treat him day after day.

Cape May County is known for its fabulous restaurants.  Treat someone to dinner.  Or, if dinner doesn’t work, how about a couple of breakfasts or lunches at their favorite spot?  And don’t forget to take good care of the wait staff.

Were you thinking of something sparkly or shiny?  Visit the local jeweler for a really special handcrafted necklace, earrings, or ring.

For that history buff, a membership at the nearby museum or historical society will provide hours of fun.

Maybe you’re stumped because someone on your list has everything.  A gift in their name to their favorite local charity might be the perfect answer and will definitely be appreciated by the cause.

You see, Christmas shopping doesn’t have to drain our pockets to our detriment and the betterment of those overseas.  Rather, if we show our care for each other and our local community by supporting our local businesses, the benefits will come back to us in so many ways.  This Christmas, let’s keep the American dream alive.  Buy local, shop often, and keep the lights burning at home.

We hope this finds you living your dreams…
